Corporate Photography Shoots Our Process From beginning, to delivered hero shots

Who is involved in your shoot?

We are a team, not a single person operation

Senior Photographer

Responsible for photography, lighting, posing, expression and the quality of the images created on the day.

Creative Director

Available for more complex briefs where the photography needs a stronger visual plan before production begins.

Human Retoucher

Finishes selected photographs individually and maintains the agreed retouching style.

Client Support

Helps manage bookings, scheduling, communication and shoot logistics.

Post Shoot Support

Manages galleries, selections, retouching requests, delivery and future requirements.

Larger productions can also involve assistants, additional photographers, video crew, producers and hair and makeup artists.

We build the team around the job rather than making the job fit the team.

Good corporate photography needs more than a photographer

A photography shoot might only last a few hours.

The images may need to work for years.

Hero Shot is an Australian corporate photography team specialising in professional headshots, executive portraits, team photography, workplace photography, personal branding, events and corporate video.

We work with businesses in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and across Australia.

Our process is designed around one simple idea.

The photographer should be able to concentrate on creating great images, while the rest of the team makes sure everything around the shoot is properly managed.

That means planning before the shoot, experienced direction on the day, human retouching afterwards and support once the photographer has left.

For businesses that need photography regularly, we also keep their photography history and company style together so every new shoot does not start from scratch.

First, we work out what the images need to do

A headshot for a company website has a different job from an executive portrait for PR.

Workplace photography needs to work differently again.

Before we start planning equipment or lighting, we want to know where the images will be used, who will see them and what the business needs them to communicate.

For corporate headshots, this might mean establishing a consistent background, crop, lighting style and expression.

For workplace or brand photography, it could mean planning images for your website, LinkedIn, recruitment, PR, campaigns and social media at the same time.

The better we understand the job of the images, the better we can plan the shoot.

More complex brief? We plan it properly

Not every shoot needs a Creative Director.

A straightforward company headshot session may simply need a clear brief and an experienced photographer.

Larger projects can involve much more.

For workplace photography, executive portraits, personal branding and brand photography, our Creative Director can help establish the visual direction before the shoot.

That can include locations, backgrounds, wardrobe, lighting, compositions, image references and the mix of photographs required.

The benefit is fewer decisions being made under pressure on shoot day.

Everyone knows what we are trying to create before the camera comes out.

Your photographer needs to be good with people, not just cameras

Most people we photograph are not professional models.

They are executives, lawyers, accountants, doctors, founders, sales teams and employees who may only have a professional photograph taken every few years.

Some are comfortable in front of a camera.

Plenty are not.

Our senior photographers direct posture, body position and expression throughout the session.

We are looking at the small things that change a portrait.

Shoulders, jaw position, eyes, tension.

Whether an expression actually looks like the person standing in front of us.

Good corporate portrait photography is not simply about getting the lighting right.

It is about helping someone look comfortable, confident and recognisably themselves.

Your final photographs are retouched by a human

All our retouching is done by an in-house human editor.

Technology can assist parts of our workflow, but our retouching is done by our own retoucher, and final hero shots are passed through an secondary approval process before they are sent to clients.

That matters. Skin is not treated the same way as clothing.

A stray hair is different from a permanent feature.

A distracting crease might need attention while something that makes a person recognisably themselves should remain.

Our aim is not to create an artificial version of you.

It is to finish the photograph properly while keeping you looking like you.

Client photographs also remain within our professional production workflow rather than being uploaded to third party AI retouching services.

The shoot ends. Our involvement doesn’t

This is where corporate photography often starts to become messy.

Someone needs another crop.

Marketing cannot find an old file.

A new employee joins.

An executive wants a small retouching change.

Melbourne needs to match the portraits taken in Sydney.

The photographer may have finished their part of the job, but the company still needs support.

Hero Shot has a team responsible for galleries, selections, retouching requests, delivery and future photography requirements.

You are dealing with a photography business, not trying to track down an individual photographer six months later.

Keep your company photography consistent as your team grows

Corporate headshots rarely happen once.

New staff join. Leadership changes. New offices open.

Over time, different shoots can introduce different crops, backgrounds, lighting and retouching styles.

Without a clear system, your team page can slowly start to look inconsistent.

For ongoing clients, Hero Shot creates a dedicated client dashboard that keeps your photography history and company style in one place.

This can include:

  • Approved headshot examples
  • Background and lighting style
  • Framing and crop
  • Retouching direction
  • Previous shoot records
  • Company specific photography notes

When a new employee needs to be photographed, we already have a clear reference for how they should look alongside everyone else.

The result is a more consistent website, a stronger visual brand and less time spent trying to recreate what was done before.

This becomes even more important across multiple offices

Consistency is relatively easy when everyone is photographed on the same day.

It becomes harder when Sydney is photographed in March, Melbourne six months later and a new executive needs a headshot in Brisbane the following year.

Hero Shot can coordinate corporate photography across multiple Australian locations using an established photography style as the reference.

The aim is that someone looking at your website should not immediately see which people were photographed on different days, in different cities or by different photographers.

Why have all of this behind a photography shoot?

Because corporate photography has a habit of becoming inconsistent when nobody owns the bigger picture.

One photographer creates the original headshots.

Someone else photographs the new starters.

A third person works on another office.

The background changes slightly.

The crop changes.

Retouching gets heavier.

Five years later, the company website looks like several different businesses stitched together.

That is what our process is designed to avoid.

The photographer concentrates on the people and the photography.

Our retoucher protects the finish.

Our support team keeps things moving afterwards.

Our client dashboard helps preserve the company’s visual standard over time.

And when the brief is more complex, creative direction makes sure everyone knows where we are heading before the shoot begins.

From one headshot to an ongoing corporate photography program

The same process can scale depending on what you need.

An individual executive portrait might involve a photographer, retoucher and support team.

A larger company may need regular staff headshots, several offices photographed, workplace photography, video and an established visual style that needs to remain consistent for years.

Hero Shot is set up to manage both.

That is the difference between simply completing a photography shoot and building a photography system a business can continue to use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hero Shot use AI retouching?

Hero Shot uses human retouchers to finish selected photographs. Technology may assist parts of our workflow, but final aesthetic decisions are made by a person.

Can Hero Shot match our existing company headshots?

Often, yes. We review the existing background, lighting, crop, composition and retouching style before confirming how closely it can be reproduced.

Can you keep future employee headshots consistent?

Yes. For ongoing clients, we can document the agreed photography style and keep it within the Hero Shot client dashboard as a reference for future shoots.

Can Hero Shot photograph teams in different Australian cities?

Yes. Hero Shot manages corporate photography in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and other Australian locations. For multi location projects, we can work to an established photography style to improve consistency between offices.

What if our staff do not like being photographed?

That is extremely common. Our photographers provide posing and expression direction throughout the session rather than expecting staff to know what to do in front of a camera.

Do we need a Creative Director?

Not necessarily. Straightforward corporate headshots usually require less pre production. Creative direction becomes more useful for workplace photography, executive portraits, brand photography and larger commercial briefs.

Planning a photography project?

Tell us who needs to be photographed, where the images will be used and what you are trying to achieve.

We can help work out the right approach from there.
