If you’re searching for startup founder headshots in Sydney, you already know the problem. Your product is polished. Your pitch deck is tight. But your LinkedIn photo is a cropped conference selfie from 2022.
Investors, journalists, and potential hires form an impression before you say a word. At Hero Shot, founder and lead photographer Sammer Khatri has worked with founders at every stage, from pre-seed operators working out of Fishburners on Harris Street to Series A teams fitting out Barangaroo offices. The brief shifts meaningfully at each stage, and so does the approach.

When a professional headshot is not what you need
Before anything else: if you’re pre-seed, bootstrapped, and have zero budget, a well-lit phone portrait in front of a plain wall is genuinely fine for now. Natural window light, a neutral background, and a clean outfit will carry you through early conversations.
Come back when you’re preparing for a funding round, a media push, or a website launch. Spending on headshots before you have a product worth photographing is the wrong order.

What makes a founder headshot different from a standard corporate headshot
Corporate headshots are built for consistency across large teams. They read as part of a firm’s visual identity. Founder headshots need to carry personality and authority at the same time, because you are the company’s face in a way a mid-level employee never is.
The register is specific. Too formal and you look like you’ve borrowed someone else’s identity. Too casual and you undercut the credibility you’re building with enterprise clients or institutional investors.
The brief Sammer works to
At Hero Shot, Sammer Khatri talks about “approachable authority” as the target register for founder images, and it means something concrete in practice. In our Petersham studio, Sammer positions the key light slightly above eye level to shape the face without flattening it, and brings a fill source lower to retain shadow detail without removing all contrast. The result looks confident and open. Not flat, not dramatic.

That’s the starting point. The brief then pulls it one way or the other depending on who the founder is pitching.
Two briefs, one studio
A fintech founder came in ahead of a capital raise. He’d been told by his lead investor to sharpen his personal brand before the round closed. Sammer kept the background neutral grey, added a subtle rim light to separate him cleanly from the background, and shot in a three-quarter pose. Navy blazer, no tie. When the founder saw the first frame on the tethered screen, he said it was the first time he’d looked like the company he was building. That’s the brief working.
For a wellness brand founder, the goal was warmth over authority. She wanted her audience, mostly women buying direct-to-consumer, to feel she was accessible. Sammer dropped the rim light, moved to a warmer background tone, and shifted to a slightly lower camera angle to open up the composition. She left with images she used across her website relaunch and her first press feature. Same studio, same photographer, entirely different result.
What a pre-seed shoot actually looks like
Pre-seed founders often arrive at the studio with a different kind of pressure. At Fishburners, where a number of our early-stage clients are based, the common situation is a founder who needs one strong image for a cold outreach campaign or an accelerator application, not a full brand shoot.
One founder came in with a Fishburners demo day two days away. He needed a single frame for the event programme and his pitch deck cover. Sammer kept the session to one outfit and two background options, focused on getting two or three genuinely usable frames, and had him out the door in under 40 minutes. That’s a different session shape than a Series A team shoot, and it’s worth knowing before you book.
Studio vs outdoor: which suits a startup founder?
The short answer: if your audience is investors or enterprise clients, start with studio. If your audience is consumers or you’re building a personal brand with warmth at its centre, outdoor or natural light is worth considering.
Studio gives you control and consistency across a team. Outdoor gives you context and a less formal register. For most founders, studio is the safer default because the images travel better across a pitch deck, a LinkedIn profile, and a press kit without looking out of place in any of them.
We’ve written a full breakdown of the trade-offs in our outdoor headshots vs studio headshots guide if you want to work through the decision in more detail.
What to bring to your session

Preparation makes a real difference to the images you walk away with. Here’s what we recommend:
- Two to three outfits. A blazer option, a smart-casual option, and something that reflects your brand’s tone. Avoid white next to white backgrounds and small checks or stripes that create visual noise on camera.
- A clear brief. Where will these images live? LinkedIn, your website, a press kit, an investor deck? Different placements favour different crops and compositions.
- A reference image or two. Not to copy, but to give Sammer a sense of the register you’re after.
- A rested face. Book mid-morning if you can. Avoid scheduling the session after a late investor dinner.
- Clean, simple grooming. Aim for a slightly more polished version of your everyday self, not a departure from it.

Common mistakes founders make with headshots
Waiting until it’s urgent
The most common situation Sammer sees is a founder who books the day before a speaking slot or a media interview. The session still produces good images, but the pressure removes the ease that makes a founder photo feel natural. Book before you need them.
Choosing a style that doesn’t match the company stage
A hyper-formal, dark-background executive portrait can look mismatched on a two-person seed-stage startup’s website. Sammer will flag this if a founder arrives with a brief that’s pulling against their actual positioning. It’s a common mismatch and worth thinking through before the day.
Using the same image across five years
Your headshot should be updated when your appearance or positioning changes significantly. An image from a previous corporate career sends a confusing signal when you’re now a founder with a distinct brand of your own.
Skipping the team altogether
Mismatched photos across a founding team, shot in different styles and lighting, suggest a group that hasn’t aligned yet. A consistent set of images across your website and LinkedIn profiles signals the opposite.
Founder headshots for the whole team
Many of the team sessions we photograph at Hero Shot begin with a founder booking and expand to include co-founders, heads of department, and early hires. It’s one of the most efficient investments a startup can make in its visual brand.
We can photograph your team at our Petersham studio in Sydney or on-site at your office. For teams based in the CBD, Barangaroo, or Surry Hills, the studio is straightforward to reach. On-location sessions are available for larger teams or companies that prefer their own environment.
If your startup sits in the IT or SaaS space, our tech headshots article covers the broader landscape for technology companies, including enterprise teams, and is worth reading alongside this one.
Individual founder sessions

Not every founder needs a full team shoot. If you’re a solo operator, updating your images ahead of a funding round, or preparing for a media appearance, an individual session is the right starting point.
Our headshots for individuals service is built for exactly this. Sammer works with individual founders regularly, and the session structure is designed to get you comfortable quickly. The best frames almost always come in the second half of a session, once the initial self-consciousness has passed.
Pricing is quote-based and depends on session length and the number of edited images you need. Get in touch via our contact page and we’ll put together a recommendation based on your brief.
What you receive after your session
After your session at our Petersham studio, edited images are delivered to a private online gallery within three to five business days. You choose your favourites, and the final high-resolution files are yours to use across LinkedIn, your website, press materials, and investor decks without restriction.
If you have questions about what’s included or want to discuss your brief before booking, visit our contact page and we’ll come back to you with a session recommendation.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a founder headshot session take?
Individual founder sessions at our Petersham studio typically run 45 to 60 minutes. That covers two or three outfit changes, a few background options, and enough time to settle into the camera before we shoot the frames you’ll actually use.
What should a startup founder wear for headshots?
Wear what you’d wear to your most important investor meeting. A blazer over a clean tee works well for most founders. Avoid loud patterns and logos that date quickly. Bring two or three options and we’ll help you choose on the day.
Can I get headshots for my whole founding team in one session?
Yes. Team sessions are one of the most common bookings at Hero Shot. We photograph co-founders and early hires together so your website, LinkedIn profiles, and investor decks carry a consistent visual identity from day one.
How much do founder headshots cost in Sydney?
Hero Shot pricing is quote-based and depends on session length, number of people, and edited images needed. Studio and on-location sessions are priced differently. Visit heroshotphotography.com/contact for a quote tailored to your brief.
How soon will I receive my edited images?
Edited images are delivered to a private online gallery within three to five business days of your session. You review, select your favourites, and download the final high-resolution files. Rush delivery is available on request.
